Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Mladin, Spies & Hayden 1, 2 & 3 again

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Sweeps VIR AMA Double-Header Superbike Weekend

Round 16 – AMA Superbike Series
Alton, Virginia
Virginia International Raceway (VIR)
August 15 - 17, 2008

Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing followed up yesterday’s AMA Superbike podium sweep at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton, Virginia, with another one just like it on Sunday. This marks the fifth such sweep for the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team of Mat Mladin, Ben Spies and Tommy Hayden. The second Superbike race of the double-header weekend again started with an all- Suzuki front row of the grid and ended with six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mladin notching his ninth VIR win, his ninth win of the season and his 72nd career Superbike win overall. Two-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Spies started from pole position and brought home second place, successfully taking his 15th podium finish of the year. Rounding out the Rockstar Makita Suzuki podium in third place was again Hayden, who led the first lap of this 28-lap race. This finish is Hayden’s second podium in a row after being injured and his sixth podium of the year. Currently, Spies leads the AMA Superbike title chase, Mladin is in second place and Hayden is in 10th.

Mat Mladin:

“It was a good race for us. It was a little bit cooler today and my Rockstar Makita Suzuki crew made a few changes to the GSX-R1000 that let me know that I could run a consistent pace. I tried to set a fast pace and pull away, and I was able to do that. VIR is a place that I’ve been able to win reasonably comfortably. It’s a traditional road course and it’s got a little bit of everything. I enjoy riding here. Right now, winning races is my priority and my goal, and if I can win a couple more races in Atlanta that would be fantastic.”

Ben Spies:

“We’re doing everything we can out there, we’re riding as hard as possible on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000. Thanks to my team for giving me a completely different motorcycle to race today though we just didn’t quite have enough for Mat today. But we’ll keep on riding as hard as we can every weekend. Even though we didn’t get the win, hats off to my teammates for a great race and going one-two-three for
Rockstar Makita Suzuki.”

Tommy Hayden:
“I’ve really gotten my starts figured out in the last few weeks and that’s made a big difference for me. It was a less exciting race for the fans but I enjoyed being up there with my Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammates in first, second and third. My teammates are the best riders by far out here in my opinion and we are on the best bikes as well. It’s nice to have some momentum to finish off the season with and my goal is to be back
up on the podium and keep the momentum going.”

Gutsy Ride As Hayden Gillim Wins Second Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup Race In A Row

Red Bull Rookies Cup Podium VIR 2008

Alton, Virginia (August 17, 2008) — Hayden Gillim of Owensboro, Ky., won the Virginia International Raceway Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup race on Sunday, taking a narrow victory in a race featuring a four-rider pack fighting for the win. Gillim’s margin of victory was a slim 0.091 seconds, falling in with the other highly competitive Rookies Cup contests of 2008. Benny Solis, Jr., of North Hollywood, California led on the final lap but could not hold off Gillim’s move exiting the final turn. Bryce Prince of Bakersfield, Calif., bested Emerson Connor for the final podium position in the race stopped twice for red flags.

Gillim won the race despite having surgery to repair his left collarbone last week.

“It hurt, but the adrenaline started flowing and I felt a lot better as the race went on,” said Gillim. “We were going back and forth and I was looking to make a strong push at the end of the race. I got a better drive than Benny (Solis) did and I was able to get the win. It feels really good to get two in a row and it was a lot of fun for me to get to race with these guys. It was a lot harder (than Mid-Ohio). Battling with people is really fun. You don’t know when they’re going to pass you or when you’re going to pass them.”

Solis, the winner of four races this year, led on the final lap but could not hold off Gillim. “I rushed the last corner,” said Solis. “I went wide when I went through the double corner and I didn’t have enough power to get back to the line first. I tried my best and ended up second. I’m pretty happy with my lead in the championship but the next couple of races I will try to get more podiums or wins.” Benny now leads the championship by 32 points on the strength of four wins and a pair of second place finishes.

Bryce Prince earned his first podium finish of the year with a charge through the field. The Bakersfield, Calif., racer moved from seventh on the first lap to the top three at the checkered flag. “With the two red flags, I felt I had to get a good start. After that, I had a good battle with Huntley Nash for a couple of laps. By about halfway, I was able to catch up with the lead pack and trade positions a little bit. I almost highsided on the last lap and I thought ‘There goes my shot at a win.’ I really enjoyed the race today and would like to thank all my sponsors for helping me. Everything was overall just amazing ”

Emerson Connor from Burlington, Ontario, Can., was in the top three for virtually the entire race but ended up fourth in what was a fantastic weekend for him. Connor showed consistent speed in Virginia and was just 1.256 seconds back of the winner. “I rode strong and the KTM RC 125 was great. I was fourth today and I wanted to be a little higher but it was a good race and a lot of fun. All of the guys at the front rode really well today. I feel good about the result and I want to thank everyone that helps us race.”

Leandro Mercado had an eventful race. The Argentine started on the backup bike after his machine developed an issue on the sighting lap, but still managed fifth place. He remains second in Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup points. “I got a terrible restart,” said Leandro, who said the different settings of the bikes slowed him somewhat in the last leg of the race. “It’s okay because I ended up fifth and I am happy for the points and the championship.”

Jake Gagne of Ramona, Calif., was sixth on Sunday, ahead of Huntley Nash of Marietta, Ga. Austin DeHaven of Los Angeles, Calif., qualified 19th but rose eleven spots to earn eighth place. Cory Rech of Liverpool, N.Y., won a battle of New York riders when he beat Travis Wyman (Macedon, N.Y.) by less than a second for tenth spot.

Polesitter Tomas Puerta of Colombia led the race at one point but crashed. He remounted and finished 14th.

The race was delayed until the end of the day, necessitated by a red flag due to an incident involving Toriano Wilson of Bermuda, Luciano Ribodino of Argentina and Garet Tomlinson of Aledo, Texas. Wilson and Ribodino were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

Rossi Brno

Italy’s Valentino Rossi stormed to victory in the Czech Republic Grand Prix, after defending MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner crashed out early in the race. Seven-time world champion Rossi was unchallenged on his Yamaha to claim his second consecutive win.

“Without Stoner’s fall I probably wouldn’t have won,” admitted Rossi, who opens up a 51-point lead in the world standings on Stoner after 12 of 18 races. A win is worth 25 points.

Spaniard Toni Elias of Ducati finished second 15.005sec behind the Italian with Loris Capirossi of Suzuki crossing in third at 21.689sec.

Stoner, who had battled flu-like symptoms on Saturday to claim his sixth successive pole position, was forced to withdraw after just six laps of the Brno circuit. He fell on a right bend and slid across the track and into the gravel as he was leading, one second ahead of Rossi. The Australian attempted to get back into the race but was forced out because of damage to his Ducati.

Toni Elias Brno 08

Toni Elias, Alice Team rider, has registered great lap times since the warm up concluded with the fifth fastest lap time. Then in the race, where he started in thirteenth position, he has made understand that today it was a completely different story. Incredible overtakes that allowed him to find himself in sixth position after only seven laps. But the Spanish rider wanted more, pushing his Ducati Desmosedici GP8 Sat with Bridgestone tires to the maximum reaching in short time the group battling for second position. In just a few laps, thanks to spectaculars overtake, the second position was secured and he was able to control the distance from the third rider, Loris Capirossi. First podium of the Alice Team’s history and a lot of happiness in the garage. His teammate, Sylvain Guintoli, hasn’t been so lucky today. In the warm up he even registered better lap times compared Elias, but during the race he found a technical problem that didn’t allowed him to push at the limit. The Frenchmen has concluded in twelfth position and will try to do much better in the next world championship round in Misano in two weeks time.

Fabiano Sterlacchini – Alice Team Technical Director
“Surely a great day for us. Since Friday we understood that we could have fought with the fastest riders on this track and Toni has been superlative today. In the warm up we have found a great compromise for the race that allowed Toni to make an incredible comeback. We hope to remain at this level till the end of the season. Unluckily Sylvain, who also registered very interesting lap times during the all weekend, encountered some technical problems that didn’t allow him to give his best. We are sure he will be able to do better in Misano.”

Toni Elias – Alice Team rider (2nd in the race – 12th in the MotoGP World Championship)
“I am very happy by my performance. Since Germany we have improved a lot also thanks to the new technical material received by Ducati. I also thought I could have done a podium in Laguna Seca but I committed a mistake and I couldn’t make it. Today everything went in the right direction. I am sure that we can maintain the same level for the rest of the season. I heard rumors that wanted me in Superbike next season: I never spoke to anybody in Superbike and I want to remain in MotoGP for many more years. I am happy to work in the Alice Team and with the Pramac Racing structure. If things will go well in this final part of the season I don’t see why I should change Team.”

Sylvain Guintoli – Alice Team rider (12th in the race – 14th in the MotoGP World Championship)

“This morning everything seemed perfect. I registered very interesting rhythm that would have allowed me to be easily in the top five during the race. Unluckily, after only a few laps, I lost grip with the right side of the front tire and my lap times were more than a second slower compared to this morning. I don’t know what happened, we are analyzing the situation, but I am very disappointed because we could had have a really good race.”

L Capirossi Brno 08

Loris Capirossi raced his Rizla Suzuki GSV-R to his maiden podium for the team - and 99th overall of his career - at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno today.

Starting from ninth on the grid Capirossi lost a couple of places early on, but he fought back to regain them by the end of the first lap. He then set about hunting down the riders in front of him and was involved in numerous battles before making his way up to a podium position on lap seven. He then became involved in a fight with team-mate Chris Vermeulen until the experienced Italian finally got the better of his colleague on lap nine, after the two had overtaken each other a number of times. Capirossi held on to second place briefly before being passed by Toni Elias, but from then on a podium position never looked in doubt and Capirossi crossed the line in third place to the delight of his team.

Vermeulen had a strong start to the race and was up into third on the fifth lap, and was then promoted to second when early race-leader Casey Stoner crashed out. Unfortunately, Vermeulen couldn’t hold on to a podium position as he started to suffer with some front grip issues and was relegated down to seventh. He battled on for the rest of the race and fought his way back to sixth at the end to leave him in seventh place overall in the World Championship.

Today’s race was held in dry, but very overcast conditions with track temperatures reaching 29ºC. A record crowd of 146,133 packed the circuit to see Valentino Rossi race to his fifth win of the season and strengthen his lead at the top of the championship table.

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP now remains in Brno for a two-day test where it will evaluate many new parts for the ever-improving Rizla Suzuki GSV-R. The team will then travel to Misano for the San Marino Grand Prix which will be held on Sunday 31st August.

Loris Capirossi:

“I want to say what a fantastic day this is for me today! After the injury in Barcelona I have not had the opportunity to go quick due to my condition, but all the people around me - including the whole team and Suzuki - stayed really close to me and gave me great support so I am really happy to pay them back with this podium - it actually feels more like a win for me because it means so much! After the break following Laguna, I was able to get some rest and start training again to get myself back in the best condition, and although I am still not 100% I am nearly there and I was able to challenge all weekend. My dream this weekend was to fight for a podium, after Friday I felt I could do that and today I started with a good focus to do my best. This result is for all the team and everybody working with me, because when we make a great result I am really happy, and today I am certainly really happy!”

Chris Vermeulen:

“I got a good start and was scrapping with the Kawasakis – which seemed like they were surprisingly fast today – and got held up by them a bit. I managed to get past Ant West and then started to catch John Hopkins, but I started to have some issues with front grip and had to change the way I was riding the bike. Once I got past John it felt like I had nothing left and the situation was getting worse – which was awful as the race was only about seven laps old! I kept my head down and worked out the best way to ride and how to try to preserve the tire. At one stage I thought about coming in, but I worked it out and managed to get home in sixth place to get some points. I’d like to congratulate Loris on his podium today. It was good to see him come back like that after his injury and I’m very happy for him!”

Paul Denning – Team Manager:

“Everybody at Rizla Suzuki and back at the Factory are absolutely delighted for Loris that he has overcome the injuries that have restricted him in the last few Grands Prix – he has shown true fighting spirit. A podium is a great reward for his efforts and for his crew who have kept working so hard to help us move forward. Thanks to Loris and to them!

“Early in the race it also looked like we had the potential for Chris to be challenging for the podium, but it wasn’t to be. I think today’s conditions were a bit different to Friday afternoon and unfortunately both the guys – but to a larger extent Chris – suffered from that, making it difficult to keep a consistently fast pace throughout the race. Nonetheless, Chris adapted well and came back into the top-six at the end, and again his performance this weekend has been very strong and consistent.

“Whilst we’re very happy with our third podium in succession, at the same time we have to be realistic and acknowledge that the gap to the winning pace is too big for comfort. We know we have the riders and the crew to take the next step and we are looking forward to a very extensive test over the next two days, with a huge number of items to try, to help us close that gap as quickly as we can.”

Girls of Brno

In 250cc, Spain’s Alex Debon, riding for Aprilia, made an audacious attack on the last lap to dramatically win ahead of compatriot Alvaro Bautista with Italian championship leader Marco Simoncelli, coming over in third.

Germany’s Stefan Bradl, riding an Aprilia, achieved his first career win in the 125cc race.

The next race this season will be the San Marino Grand Prix on August 31.

AMA Formula Xtreme Top 10 Finishers

Virginia International Raceway (VIR)
August 15 - 17, 2008

1. Josh Hayes, Honda
2. Jake Zemke, Honda
3. Martin Cardenas, Team M4 EMGO Suzuki
4. Aaron Gobert, Honda
5. Steve Rapp, Kawasaki
6. Chaz Davies, Kawasaki
7. Jeff Wood, Yamaha
8. Larry Pegram, Ducati
9. Taylor Knapp, Yamaha
10. Nicky Moore, Kawasaki

After struggling with misfortune and confidence issues ever since his dominant win in the season-opening Daytona 200 was stripped following the post-race technical inspection, the Mississippian finally looked like his old self again today.

While his win at Mid-Ohio was huge, even Hayes admitted afterwards he it was something of a gift, as he was awarded the win after a red flag brought the race to an early conclusion, just after he had been passed by his Erion Honda teammate, Jake Zemke.

There was no such need for asterisks this weekend, however, as Hayes was fast right from the opening practice, secured the pole on Friday, and then ran to the checkered flag all alone in front during Saturday’s final.

Zemke’s chances were damaged early when he suffered a relatively poor start, having to pick his way up through a number of riders before zeroing in on Hayes. Still, once through, he had no luck chasing down #1-plated CBR600RR.

Hayes said, “I’ve been pretty fortunate that I showed up in the right frame of mind. The bike was working well and we pulled it right from the truck and I think we were close to the lap record pace when the thing came out on Thursday for promoter day.

“I’m really, really happy for my crew. I didn’t relax very much because Jake was back there and he’d been the class of the field this year. You can never count him out so when I got to four laps to go and four seconds, I was still a little nervous. ‘Can he take a second a lap out on me, I’m really not sure. I don’t want to screw this up?’

“I just tried to ride smart and bring it home for the crew. They needed it. This year I’ve been a bit of a letdown for those boys I think so I really wanted to do well for them this weekend and hopefully we have another good race tomorrow.”

“The start was horrible — I definitely have no one to blame but myself,” Zemke admitted. “I just wasn’t ready when the light went green. It was a really quick light when it went from two to one and it almost instantly went green and I really wasn’t expecting that. It’s my own fault for not being ready.

“I started slipping the clutch pretty bad and realized it probably wasn’t a good idea to burn up the clutch on the start so I just went ahead and let it fly and let the thing bog. I don’t even know what place I was going into Turn 1, maybe sixth or so. I just had to work my way through a few guys and Josh probably already had at least a second at that point by the time I got into second. I put my head down for a few laps and tried to make a little dent into Josh’s lead. I saw where I was making up a little bit of ground but at the same time I figured he was probably riding fairly comfortable up there. I pushed for a few laps and then started thinking better of it. I just needed to bring this thing home…

“Josh just rolled off the truck and was on fire this weekend. We rolled off the truck and struggled this weekend. To be able to do the times we did in the race is a testament to my crew. They’ve been racking our brains all weekend trying to figure this thing out so I can get some grip and go forward. Hats off to Josh. He rode and awesome race and has been riding great all weekend.”

The final podium position was decided following a thrilling dogfight, featuring holeshot winner Larry Pegram on the LeoVince Foremost Insurance Ducati, Attack Kawasaki teammates Steve Rapp and Chaz Davies, Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas, and Rockwall Honda’s Aaron Gobert.

Late in the race Rapp, Cardenas, and Gobert transformed it into a three-way fight for the spot, and the Colombian and Australian waged a final-lap battle with Cardenas getting the upper hand in the end, claiming his second straight FX podium result.

Cardenas said, “At the beginning I got a good start that I think I got third. I battled all the way in the race with two Attack Kawasakis and Aaron Gobert. I had a lot of passes with Steve Rapp going into turn 1. I passed him on the brakes and he passed me again.

“At the end Gobert came and he passed both of us. I tried to stay as close as possible to make a move on the last lap. We got behind some lappers and that helped me a little bit about two laps from the end. I got close enough and on the final lap I made the pass in turn one on the brakes. I tried to maintain that position for the whole lap and it worked out.”

Gobert finished a close fourth with Rapp rounding out the top five. Davies claimed sixth, while Pegram was displaced to eighth by Bettencourts VIR master, Jeff Wood.

Ray C Extreme’s Taylor Knapp and Moto Uno’s Nicky Moore completed the top ten.

Zemke boasts a massive 45-point advantage over Rapp (267 vs. 222) and is primed to finally lock up his first AMA crown at Road Atlanta in two weeks’ time.

Fiat Yamaha team rider Valentino Rossi qualified second in Brno today, despite a soaking wet day at the Czech track as the MotoGP rain curse struck once again. Tomorrow will be the Italian’s seventh front-row start of the season and he will once again share it with Casey Stoner, who qualified on pole today.

After heavy rain overnight this morning’s practice was run on a damp track, with Rossi finishing the session in fifth. From then on the weather worsened and the best laps of the afternoon qualifying session were done in the first half, before too much standing water gathered on the track and the conditions deteriorated even more. Rossi’s Bridgestone rain tyres worked well and he was able to set some consistent laps early on, good enough to secure him the all-important front row spot. The forecast for tomorrow is mixed but the 29-year-old is confident that he will be in good shape to fight at the front, come rain or shine.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 2ndTime: 2′12.846Laps: 15
“I hope that we are in good shape for tomorrow, if it’s wet or dry. For sure though, like everyone else, I hope it will be dry because the conditions today were really terrible! After twenty minutes this afternoon there was too much water and it was impossible to improve the setting of the bike or the time, so I am glad I was able to do some good laps at the beginning. I think I can be more competitive in the dry, because also we have a few modifications to try, so hopefully it will be dry all day tomorrow to give us the best chance. Let’s keep hoping and see how we go!”

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
“We’re happy because we’ve reached our target of getting on the first row despite the difficult conditions today. Valentino did very well to make the most of the early part of the session and get some good laps in before it got so much worse. We are expecting tomorrow to be drier so we will try to make the most of this front row to get a good start and then hopefully fight for the win.”

Disastrous wet qualifying for Lorenzo leaves him last in Brno

A soaking wet day at Brno brought about a depressing day’s work for Jorge Lorenzo, the Fiat Yamaha Team rookie finishing the day in last place. It is a far cry from the consecutive pole positions with which the youngster started his year in MotoGP and he is faced with a difficult task tomorrow to make any kind of headway through the field.

Lorenzo was unlucky to miss the driest part of the qualifying hour, when he was inside the garage working on modifying his bike in order to try to find more grip. During the last forty minutes conditions deteriorated even more and there was no chance for him to improve his time, unable as he was to find any kind of grip or confidence in his tyres. His time of 2′23.701 left him outside of the 107% qualifying cut-off, but he will be allowed to race tomorrow at the discretion of Race Direction.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 17thTime: 2′23.701Laps: 12
“It’s been a bad day! At the start of the qualifying it was drier and this is when I was in the garage trying to improve the bike with my team; I missed my chance and this is when the others set their fastest laps. I have had days almost as bad as this before, but I have to say that the fault is not all mine. I think that it is evident at the moment that our tyres are not working as they should. I am a professional however and I have to wait and have confidence in Michelin to find the right way forward. For tomorrow it’s going to be important to get a good start and try to get in the top ten. The surface is very good but we don’t have the grip we need, so whatever happens with the weather, it will be very hard.”

Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
“A really bad day for us; the worst qualifying session of the season. We already had some issues with front grip in the dry yesterday and we thought that in the rain we would be able to improve. Unfortunately things went even more wrong today and we couldn’t find any grip for both the front and the rear. We tried all the tyres available and, even with the softest, Jorge didn’t have enough confidence to ride at a decent pace. We had already tried some different settings this morning to try to improve the grip and this afternoon we tried some even bigger modifications, but the bike didn’t react to the changes in the way we hoped because of the low grip level from the tyres. Tomorrow will be a really hard race because we’re starting from last and, even if we can improve our pace in the dry, it’s still going to be very difficult.”

The Ducati Xerox Team travels just an hour down the road from their base in Borgo-Panigale, Bologna for the next round of the World Superbike Championship at the coastal resort of Misano Adriatico. Temperatures are set to rise to 40°C in time for the traditional “summer” Superbike date, in total contrast to the cold of the Nuerburgring just two weeks ago. The Misano World Circuit always attracts a huge crowd when hosting the Superbikes and this year, with Troy Bayliss and his Ducati 1098 F08 currently leading the battle for the title, is sure to be no different. With seven out of fourteen rounds already completed, Bayliss has won more races than any other rider so far with six first place finishes, but the race for the championship victory is still wide open with several riders in the running for the ultimate prize.

Troy Bayliss

Troy took the double win at the Misano circuit last season as well as in 2002. He also won races here in 2001 and 2006, accumulating important points that contributed to his eventual championship victories in those years. Undoubtedly the circuit at which he has consistently performed best, Troy hopes for a similar outcome this season.

“Misano is one of my favourite circuits and it’s treated me very well over the years. There’s always an amazing atmosphere and great weather too! I was disappointed with my last performance in Italy at Monza so I hope this time I can give the home crowd a better show. We plan to try the new set-ups that we worked on during last week’s Mugello tests, so we’ll wait and see how that goes and hope to put an end to the problems we’ve had in the last couple of rounds.”

Michel Fabrizio

Michel has had a bit of a rocky history at this track over his last two seasons in World Superbike but won here in the Superstock 1000 category in 2003, the year in which he eventually went on to take the riders title. Now on board the 1098 F08, Michel would like to do well in front of Ducati’s home crowd.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how I go on the Ducati machine at this track. My results in the past have been a bit mixed at Misano but then I did win the Superstock 1000 race here in 2003 so I know I can go well. I enjoy the track and as many of the Ducati family will be at this, the company’s home race, I’d really like to give the team something to celebrate!”
